We have been reading a great many books written by Kevin Henkes in Room 3 lately. Some of our favorites include:
Chrysanthemum Owen Wemberly Worries Wating Shiela Rae The Brave Lily's Big Day We love his tales of little mice and the lessons he teaches us. Mackenzie has shared a few of her books from home and we are most thankful!

We have been talking about annoying behavior and how to deal with someone that is acting annoying, Yesterday we began a discussion about dangerous and disruptive behavior. Dangerous behaviors are ones when someone could get hurt and disruptive behaviors are behaviors where something could get damaged. We call these double D's and bullying also falls into this category. Double D's always need to be brought to the attention of a teacher or grown up in charge.
Our Make Way for Ducklings/Boston field trip has been rescheduled to Thursday, June 2nd with a rain date of Thursday, June 9th. We needed to reschedule due to a conflict with Field Day. Six months seems like a long way away, but we all know it will be here in a snap! All parents are welcome to join us on this field trip so please mark your calendars if you are interested in joining us.
We are having a BLAST playing in the snow at recess! Please remember snow pants, winter boots, hats, and water proof gloves for outdoor play everyday. We love to slide down snow mounds, build snowmen and just play. They right gear makes all the difference. Thank you for your attention to this detail. :)
Today we read the book Owen by Kevin Henkes. In the story, Owen is a little mouse that does not want to give up his blanket. We enjoyed the story and talked about stuffed animals, blankets and other treasures from our "younger days". During writer's workshop students wrote about these comforts and shared with the group. I was really pleased with the level of enthusiasm in class today with sharing, writing and listening to one another. In a recent Open Circle we talked about using a "speak up voice" when presenting to the class. A speak up voice means:
We do a lot speaking to the group and public speaking is a very important skill to learn. Valentine’s Day is approaching and I wanted to take a minute and tell you about how we celebrate it in Room 3. We DO NOT do individual Valentine cards. I am hoping I am writing to you far enough in advance to save you the money. There is no value in making your child write his/her name 20 times to then bring home a bag full of cards that need to be recycled.
We will celebrate Valentine’s Day in our own way. I will make a big heart for each child and on Friday, February 12th we will take time for each child to write a kind note on all the other hearts. I have done this in the past and it is an extremely touching project. At the end of the day each student has a heart with 20 affirmations on it. Watching each student read his/her heart would put Hallmark to shame…. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. We are so lucky to have paired up with Ms. Ciavarro's fourth grade class as buddies. We meet every other Friday and both classes look forward to our time together. We got together yesterday and each pair read a book then either played a board game in small groups or made pictures. It is really fun to watch the "big" kids interact with Room 3 students.
Reminder tomorrow, Friday, January 15th is spirit day! Wear your favorite football team gear or Wayland colors and send some positive energy to our New England Patriots!
We could not wait to go to recess yesterday! Winter. FINALLY! We geared up and braved the wind and it was delightful to watch Room 3 play in the snow. We were so excited to to catch snow on our tongues, play snow soccer, build mini snowmen and just enjoy the beautiful scenery. Please remember snow pants, hats, water proof gloves and scarves. If you would like to send in an extra set of clothes to keep in school in case of getting wet from snow, I am happy to keep them in the classroom. If you would like to keep snow pants at school send me a quick note and we will keep them here too. |
