In math we are learning different strategies to help us with adding and subtracting. We are practicing adding doubles and doubles plus one. Students are working hard practicing showing work and strategies for solving equations. I am pleased with quality of work I see.
Next Wednesday at 9:00 all students will be performing in a special school meeting. We will be singing the "Turkey Tango" as part of a Giving Thanks themed meeting. Wednesday is also our pajama day read in. Students are welcome to wear pajamas to school. We will return to the classroom for snack and recess after school meeting then welcome any parents that wish to stop in and read to your child, a small group or the whole class. The read in will be from 10:45-11:45. Feel free to come to school meeting and stay- if you want....
A reminder we dismiss at noon on Wednesday and there is no lunch and no BASE. If your child has a different dismissal plan for that day please send me an email and let me know what the change is or send me a note. Today in math we talked about doubles. Doubles are when you add the same number to itself. I was impressed with the patterns students discovered and explained to classmates.
In writing we started opinion pieces. We read the book Night of the Vegi Monster and talked about the difference between a fact and an opinion. Students all chose a topic and began a graphic organizer. They wrote a topic sentence and are in the process of generating four supporting reasons for their opinion. We will then use the graphic organizer to write a well structured paragraph and generate a concluding sentence. Amazing writing going on here in Room 3! Ask you child to describe what adding doubles means? Also, ask what the difference is between fact and opinion. We have been working on showing how we know during math. We have learned that students that are able to explain how they solve equations have greater math understanding and are more successful in middle school. In math we are drawing "math pictures", using equations and number bonds to explain thinking. We will incorporate more strategies as the year goes on. Students are bringing home excellent examples today. Ask your child to explain one of the equations and answers to you.
This morning we enjoyed a cultural enrichment performance by Manquito. Manquito is a Carribean musical group. They played instruments and music from places such as Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. We had a blast! Many thanks to the PTO for organizing such an exciting performance!
Six and seven year olds do not have any political agendas. They are learning to see the world through others eyes and are compassionate and easy going. They play well together and are enthusiastic. First graders absorb everything around them and carry all they hear- even things they do not understand. Today, there were some students that were very sad and asked lots of questions about Clinton and her next steps. There were also students that were very happy that Trump won. We talked a lot today about feelings and that ALL feelings are always ok. We also spent a lot of time talking about PRIDE. PRIDE are the core values at Loker School we all share and that guide us through all challenges and accomplishments.
Yesterday we worked in the maker space lab creating string telephones. Our challenge is to create a way to communicate with another class in the event of a power outage. Students created designs in their science journals using paper cups, yarn, gimp and paper clips. Yesterday in small groups they attempted to create their designs, We talked about needing a vibration to hear sound and two groups succeeding in feeling the vibration in their phones. Students will redesign and recreate over and over until they succeed. AMAZING ENGINEERS! Nose picking has been a recent topic of conversation in our room. There are some pickers and we need to shift this behavior as first graders are well aware of socially acceptable behaviors. I read a book called, I am a BOOGER...Treat me with Respect to launch our conversation. I have included some great pages from the book to spring board some conversations with your child. Thank you! |
