Today we learned about the nickel. We looked at the characteristics and learned how to count coins combining nickels and pennies. My favorite comment during the lesson was, "ohhhhhh, counting coins is much easier than finding missing addends!"
Our next field trip is quickly approaching. We will be going to see Aesop's Fables at Mechanics Hall in Worcester on Wednesday, May 12th. I will be looking for two parents to join us on this trip. Please sign and return the permission slip by next Friday and please include a check for the exact amount. Thank you! Have a wonderful weekend!

We had an outstanding time on our field trip today! We took part in the "Egg to Chick" program and learned about the changes that happen during the 21 day incubation period. We touched a fresh egg and chick. We saw chickens, piglets, pigs, goats, rabbits, sheep and goats. Thank you to Mr. Welton, Mrs. O'Donnell, and Mrs. Andler for chaperoning our trip!
We are very excited for our filed trip tomorrow to the Natick Organic Farm. Some things to remember: *Bring a lunch and drink to eat before we leave and an afternoon snack. Hot lunch and milk WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE *Forecast calls for sunshine and temperatures around 54 degrees: dress in comfortable, farm appropriate clothing and sneakers *Consider a hat, sunscreen and bug spray Thank you to all the parents that volunteered to chaperone. Chaperones for this trip have been contacted and confirmed. We will have a few more trips this year and hope all can join us for our trip to Boston in June. Please feel to contact us with any questions or concerns. Today in math we explored the penny. We made a list of all the things we noticed and talked about the value. We have began our unit on time and money. We will be learning the value of all the coins and how to add them together. Then we will learn to tell time to the hour and half hour. Lots of FUN math happening in Room 3!
If you have not sent in the permission slip and fee for our field trip to Natick Organic Farm on Thursday please do so tomorrow. If you have any questions or concerns contact me. I am always delighted to see how students greet one another after a vacation. There was much excitement in our classroom as we heard tales of travel, trips to museums, learning how to ride a two wheeler, playing in the yard and more time with parents. We had a great day transitioning back to school.
Please remember to send in your child's permission slip to Natick Organic Farm. Our trip is on Thursday. We are so excited to learn about eggs to chicks as our eggs will be coming next Tuesday!!! Permission slips are coming home today for our field trip later this month to Natick Organic Farms. At the farm we will participate in the program from Egg to Chick.
Here is a brief description of the program: Meet the chicks, hens and roosters on the farm and discover where they originated from in the wild! Get up close and personal with the chickens to learn about their amazing adaptations and what makes them different from other animals on the farm. Learn how a chicken's maturation process, starting from inside the egg and the important role they play on our farm once they hatch! This program is a great introduction to our chick unit. We will incubate our own chicks on Tuesday, May 3rd. I will be looking for two parent volunteers to join us on this trip. Thank you! Yesterday we revisited showing our work in math. Students are meeting the benchmark with computation but need further development with showing thinking strategies. We are revisiting this topic as a lead into perspective taking.. The explanation "I just knew it" is not enough to prove understanding in math. Yesterday we practiced explaining thinking with pictures, 10 frames, number lines, using words and place value.
We have been working very hard in math with place value and advanced addition and subtraction. Yesterday, students represented numbers with words, ten frames, addition, subtraction, tally marks, money and tens and ones. Today students rolled and added then added ones. At the end of math, students shared different strategies for completing the activities. Ask your child about the math work he/she brings home today. Many thanks to Mr. Whelton for reading to us this morning. Wonderful way to start our day. We continue to LOVE reader's workshop. During reader's workshop students practice reading skills individually and with a partner. We now have a basket in our library that contains our student created books. I am so proud of my readers and writers.
Reminder that Room 3 will visit the book fair tomorrow at 2:00. |
