Teasing was the topic of our Open Circles this week. We talked about how it feels to be teased and how to help someone who is being teased. We talked about using our words to tell the person teasing to stop. Students were reminded that mean teasing and bullying are dangerous and destructive behaviors and should be reported to an adult right away.

Today was one of those amazingly busy days! This morning we had a presentation from the author Jarrett Krosoczka. He shared with us his journey of becoming a writer/illustrator and encouraged students to stretch their imagination. He has written 31 books with more coming out later this year. Look for his books in our library and the public library. They are great!!! We began our maple sugaring unit today in science. With the help of Mr. Silkonis, we have tapped two sugar maple trees here at Loker. We will collect the sap and eventually boil it down to syrup. We are in the process of setting up our field trip to Land;s Sake Sugar Shack and I will be sending home a permission slip in the next few days. I would love one parent to accompany our class on this trip. Tomorrow is sports/fitness day here at Loker. Please dress accordingly! :) Leland Faulkner visited Loker School today. Grades K-2 enjoyed his performance that included magic, shadow puppets, story telling and origami. Room 3 students were mesmerized and truly loved the enrichment opportunity.
Todays performance was a wonderful lead into my lesson on opinion writing. We discussed the difference between facts and opinions. Using a graphic organizer, students stated whether they liked or disliked todays show. Each student then gave four reasons for his/her opinion. We will use the graphic organizer to help us write an opinion paper later this week. I would like to invite each family to come into the classroom one time between now and the end of the year as a mystery reader. I do not have a set day of the week. I am willing to work with families to schedule a time to come in. We are available most mornings at 9:00. Please let me know if there is a day sometime between now and the end of the year you would like to visit. Thank you!
Yesterday was the most delightful homecoming! It made my heart smile to see students greet each other after a week away and tell each other about vacation. We took time yesterday to share our adventures and I was so proud of how students in Room 3 listened and asked questions. I enjoyed time with my family and the freedom to not pack lunches, but I too was very happy to return to my Loker family yesterday.
This week I completed a Hiding Assessment in math individually with each student. This assessment is given to first graders three times during the year, I am THRILLED to tell you each student made improvements and nearly ALL have made our final benchmark! WOW!!!!! So proud of my hard working first graders.
We finally have amazing winter weather to play in! Please be sure to send winter weather gear everyday including hats and water proof gloves/mittens. We continue to have two recesses a day and the proper gear makes all the difference. Consider keeping a change of clothes in our child's backpack or send in for me to keep including socks. Thanks!
Much of yesterday was unexpected. Our day started as usual but after our long wintery recess we came in to a power outage and everything we are used to changed. I was very proud of my students in Room 3. They had lots of questions I did not have answers to but they were flexible and rose to the occasion. Our day at the High School was very different and very fun. One student commented that we did not do "any learning". I strongly disagree. The lesson yesterday was we cannot always count on routine and when life gives us lemons we make lemonade. :)
This is always one of my most favorite times of year. The growth I am seeing in reading and writing is so exciting! Today we shared during Writer's Workshop and the stories we listened to had clear beginnings, middles and ends. We heard transition words and saw illustrations that matched the story. I was proud of how students listened to each other and the speak up voices I heard today too. Keep up the great work!
