PEEP! PEEP! PEEP!!!! We hear lots of peeps in room 3. We are continuing to enjoy our chicks. We took them out of the cage and noticed some of the chicks are getting very fast! Some chicks were trying to jump up on students and some fell asleep nestled in comfy hands. We are in love and loving every second with our babies.

The sweet sound of peeping fills our classroom right now. We have 7 chicks!!! They vary in color from black to brown to multi color and we LOVE them! One chick seemed "disabled" this morning as it was having difficulty standing. It used its wings as crutches and seems stronger as the day has progressed. The gentleness of how the students in this class showed concerned for this particular chick gave me chills. Students had an opportunity to pet or hold the chicks and will do so again tomorrow- if they want. We hope to see you soon and introduce you to our new arrivals..
Many thanks to our amazing helpers that came in to paint duck hats on Friday. We will decorate our hats next week with eyes and feathers. We look forward to wearing them on our trip. Thank you again! We were so happy to have Mrs. Rosen come into the classroom as a mystery reader today. She read a book that had a little girl named Bella as the main character! How very cool is that? Thank you Mrs. Rosen. If you have not come into the classroom as a mystery reader, please send me an email so we can coordinate a time to get you in.
Today we began talking about time. We talked about the chronology of the day. Things that happen in the morning, afternoon, and night. The goal for telling time in first grade is time to the hour and half hour. Your child is bringing home a permission slip for our final field trip this year. Our Make way for Ducklings trip is on Thursday, June 2nd with a rain date of 6-9-16. All interested parents are welcome to join us, The cost of the trip is $2 cash for a ride on the swan boats. Many thanks to the PTO for defraying the rest of the cost for this trip! We have learned the characteristics and value of each coin, We have been practicing showing the same amount in two different ways. Yesterday and today we played store and I asked the students to show me how they would pay for individual things and combinations. I am so proud of the money knowledge Room 3 students have.
We are learning all about the life cycle of chicks as we wait (somewhat patiently) for our chicks to hatch,. It takes 21 days for eggs to develop into chickens, Our incubator simulates the heat of the mother hen and we have an egg turner that keeps the eggs from staying still. We have incubated a dozen eggs and are very hopeful for lots of babies to arrive next week. We recently had an Open Circle and discussed being honest. We talked about what it means to be honest, why it is important to be honest, and how it can be challenging to be honest sometimes. We had a very thoughtful group conversation.
As we get closer to the end of the year, it is very common for students to become more emotional and anxious. I am working with several students on managing these feelings. Learning how to be honest and talk about things is a challenge for the young and (not) so young. Encourage your child to be honest and ask for help when needed. We had a wonderful trip to Mechanics Hall today to see Aesop's Fables. Some of the fables we saw were the Lion and the Mouse, the Fox and the Grapes, and The Wind and Sun. We learned how to make some puppets and shadow puppets. A tremendous THANK YOU to Mrs. Frutman and Mrs, Dearden for accompanying us on this trip. I must tell you that a highlight of this trip was the bus ride. Students got MANY trucks to honk their horns at us and the enthusiasm of the group was infectious!
Our spring pot luck dinner will be held on Thursday, June 16th. We are looking forward to gathering as a first grade family one last time before the school year ends. Please mark your calendars and look for more information.
Reminder our field trip to Aesop's Fables will be this Thursday, May 12th. Many thanks to all the parents who offered to chaperone this trip. Mrs. Dearden and Mrs. Frutman will be accompanying us this week. Please keep in mind our Make Way for Ducklings trip is approaching on June 2nd (rain date 6/9) and ALL parents are welcome to join us then. |
