Everyday after lunch we have reader's workshop. 15-20 minutes of silent reading. Yesterday and today we took our reading outside and I witnessed 20 little wonders really enjoy reading. It has been a first grade teachers dream. I recommend encouraging your child to read every day over the summer and taking the book outside might be a really nice alternative to bedtime.

Today my scientists were given a challenge to create a flower pot that our crazy kitty would not be able to knock over. In groups of four, students created a plan with the materials I provided. One group asked for additional supplies and they were granted. We then moved to our outdoor classroom and the groups created their designs. As they worked, many groups redesigned and improved their initial plans. Amazing work done by all! I am so proud of this class and how they work as a team and rise to all challenges. As we approach the final homestretch of the school year, it is really common to see anxiety play out in different ways. I see behaviors in the classroom that are very unexpected and students needing more attention. They ask questions they know the answers to and pick fights with friends. This is all normal. It is really exciting to look forward to summer vacation but the unknown is scary and not seeing friends everyday can make some kids worry. So as the calendar rolls towards summer and the evenings are full of sports, concerts, and other special events -try to keep all routines that are possible including bedtime.
Reminder tomorrow is field day and first grade is wearing BLUE! Yesterday was the kind of day we hardly spent time in our room. We had a BLAST seeing "Ball in the House" an a cappella group that visited Loker. We also enjoyed the 3-5th grade band concert. Many thanks to Mr. Frutman for visiting Room 3 as a mystery reader.
We were very fortunate to have two mystery readers today! Thank you to Mr. Thirman and Nathan Hartoonian from grade 2 for reading to us.. Mr. Hartoonian was principal of the day today and he chose to read a favorite book to Room 3. Today we had a first grade Open CIrcle meeting with Ms. Perelli. We talked about different kinds of touch. We talked about language to use and who to talk to if touch seems wrong or we do not like it. I have emailed a letter from Ms. Perelli to all of you. Please do not hesitate to contact either one of us with any questions or concerns.
On Friday, my scientist spent time in the maker space lab creating string telephones. They were hired my the String Telephone Company and given a mission to create a phone that would carry sound. They were given certain supplies and time to create. As with any STEM lesson students designed, created, tested then redesigned, recreated, retested, etc....... I was amazed with what they did and Mr. Jones even joined us to test them out. . Thank you for sharing pictures with me! What a wonderful day had by all.... A tremendous thanks to the MANY parents that joined us today for a wonderful adventure in Boston. I feel certain we will all sleep well tonight! I asked students what they liked best today and this is what they said...
